Course Description

MTC019-SED CHRISTIAN WORSHIP: ITS ROOTS AND MEANING

This course explores Lutheran Worship, its Scriptural origins and historical practice ancient and modern, and the important role it plays in God’s mission. This course will explore Lutheran worship as it centers around three things—Word, Sacrament and prayer—and how we encounter or miss the presence and power of God in our worship gatherings.

Goals and Objectives

MTC

MTC students will
  1. ground their lives in the truth of God’s Word.
  2. translate their knowledge and skills into mission action.
  3. serve as unifying mission leaders in their communities.
  4. pursue ongoing learning for service in mission and ministry.

COURSE

Being Objectives (Spiritual Formation): The student will

  1. discern the presence and power of the Triune God in sacramental worship—whether “traditional,” “contemporary,” “emergent,” or other worship style.
  2. recognize God’s initiating actions in worship as He calls, invites, and gathers His people, as well as our response.
  3. evidence deepening empathy toward others—longtime worshiper and worship novice alike.
  4. become more aware of how God works through worship to encourage and build up the saints as well as proclaim to the lost.

Knowing Objectives (Cognitive Formation): The student will

  1. identify basic Biblical themes which inform the content and conduct of Christian worship.
  2. become aware of the historical roots and development of Lutheran liturgical traditions.
  3. recognize how God’s Presence and His ongoing story are communicated via both words and actions in our worship.

Doing Objectives (Conative Formation): The student will

  1. read and study worship materials and primary source documents through a Lutheran theological set of lenses.
  2. lead a devotion or worship for a small study group or a congregational worship moment.
