MTC018 ENGAGING OLDER ADULTS IN MINISTRY

This course focuses on the distinct and challenging ministry found with and among older adults. Students will be led into discussing and understanding the issues surrounding elderly life styles, life changes, and choices. It will address the missional possibilities immersed in that age group and how to corral that potential for God’s missional work.

Goals and Objectives

Being Objectives (Spiritual Formation): The student will

  1. exhibit characteristics of a spiritual missionary, whose habit for life and ministry centers in the Lord Jesus Christ found in Scripture;
  2. acquire an appreciation for older adult ministry and the real needs which impact healthy and whole living as people age;
  3. value the gifts and skills older adults have been given to impact missional living, thinking, and ministry.

Knowing Objectives (Cognitive Formation): The student will

  1. identify the ministry gifts and skills older adults bring and offer to missional living, thinking, and ministry;
  2. learn the Biblical mandates for a missional grace-filled response to elderly care and ministry;
  3. begin to develop an understanding and a response to the challenges older adults bring to the ministry.

Doing Objectives (Conative Formation): The student will

  1. study the demographics of aging and the effect on congregational and community life;
  2. become involved in visiting and working with older adults in homes, care facilities, and congregational ministries;
  3. develop a basic outline to incorporate older adults into the missionary activity of the congregation.
