Course Description

MTC015-SED KNOWING AND ENGAGING IN YOUR COMMUNITY

This course helps students to not only appreciate the community in which a congregation or faith community might be located, but also helps them identify ways to intimately connect with that local community. A major portion of the course is focused on developing skills and strategies to exegete and define the local community, and then implement strategies which help the congregation or faith community become part of the local fabric.

4 weeks / 8 hours

Goals and Objectives

MTC

MTC students will
  1. ground their lives in the truth of God’s Word.
  2. translate their knowledge and skills into mission action.
  3. serve as unifying mission leaders in their communities.
  4. pursue ongoing learning for service in mission and ministry.

COURSE

Being Objectives (Spiritual Formation): The student will

  • exhibit characteristics of a spiritual missionary, whose habit for life and ministry centers in
    the Lord Jesus Christ found in Scripture;
  • acquire an appreciation for the local community, its values, beliefs, and worldviews;
  • develop confidence and acceptance that mission work can be enhanced by the removal of
    cultural and communicative barriers and replaced by bridges for effective Gospel
    communication.

Knowing Objectives (Cognitive Formation): The student will

  • demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the skills needed to exegete a community;
  • demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the skills and strategies needed to engage
    in community outreach.

Doing Objectives (Conative Formation): The student will

  • become familiar with the local community;
  • demographically analyze a community to determine appropriate outreach responses for
    effectively communicating the Gospel.
