Course Description

MTC007 TEACHING THE FAITH

This foundational course will concentrate its activities and readings around mission-oriented education and equipping students for effective Bible teaching. Topics include a Lutheran perspective on education, the art of teaching, an exploration of learning styles, and evaluation and use of curricula.

8 weeks / 16 hours

Goals and Objectives

MTC

MTC students will
  1. ground their lives in the truth of God’s Word.
  2. translate their knowledge and skills into mission action.
  3. serve as unifying mission leaders in their communities.
  4. pursue ongoing learning for service in mission and ministry.

COURSE

Being Objectives (Spiritual Formation): The student will

  1. recognize and affirm the Bible as the source and norm of all Christian teaching.
  2. be inspired and inspire creativity in Christian educational design and instruction.
  3. foster an attitude of life-long learning in Christian education.
  4. apply educational techniques to continue growing in Biblical truth.

Knowing Objectives (Cognitive Formation): The student will

  1. identify the role of Christian education in God’s mission.
  2. recognize the role of the teacher in the educational process.
  3. evaluate a personal teaching style.
  4. develop personal goals and objectives for Christian education.
  5. focus on learner-centered rather than teacher-centered methods of instruction.
  6. differentiate between various learning styles and age-specific

Doing Objectives (Conative Formation): The student will

  1. utilize essential exegetical and hermeneutical principles in lesson preparation.
  2. properly distinguish Law and Gospel, understanding both the theological rationale for doing so as well as its practical application while incorporating into lesson preparation
  3. develop mission-oriented educational objectives for lesson preparation and student evaluation.
  4. design and deliver Christ-centered lesson plans and learning experiences.
  5. use scripture as reference and foundation for lesson preparation.
  6. facilitate and manage group discussion and small group dynamics.
  7. create a personal library of creative pedagogical techniques.
  8. provide mission-oriented leadership in the design and administration of a congregation’s Christian education program.
  9. evaluate commercially available materials for missional, theological, and educational content.
