Being Objectives (Spiritual Formation): The student will

1. hold a conviction that the primary purpose of the Christian Church is to be an apostolic, that is, missionary church which works through the power of the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Word and administer the sacraments.
2. appreciate Scripture as more than a source book of information but the revelation from God whose main priority is seeking and finding the lost and enlisting them in the missio Dei as a priority function of the Christian’s heartbeat and life.
3. appreciate the centrality of the congregation in God’s economy of salvation.
4. grow in personal spirituality.
5. articulate a confidence and acceptance that mission work can be enhanced by the removal of cultural and communicative barriers and replaced by bridges for effective Gospel communication.
6. understand the need for new and old believers alike to recognize their role in the congregation’s missional life and ministry.

Knowing Objectives (Cognitive Formation): The student will

1. learn God’s mission intent and how that impacts praxis and theory in and through missional ministry.
2. learn insights from which one can encourage strong Scriptural mission theology in the parish or ministry context.
3. study and understand the great challenges and the great opportunities that exist for mission today.
4. identify aspects of pre-churched, churched, and post-churched cultures.
5. learn methods to understand contexts and worldviews and micro and macro cultures in order to develop appropriate missional strategies.

Doing Objectives (Conative Formation): The student will

1. apply a Lutheran theology of missions to the missional activities and ministry of the Church today.
2. develop strategies for personal, congregational, and community missional activity.
3. develop writing skills as they relate to class and mission work.
4. develop plans for discipling new and old Christians into the missional ministry of congregations and Christian communities.
