Course Description

MTC003 THE CHRISTIAN FAITH: DOCTRINE

This course presents a systematic study of the historic basic doctrine of the Christian Church from the Lutheran perspective as seen through God’s missional movement in the world. The focus will be on Creation, Redemption, and the Means of Grace.

8 weeks / 16 hours

Goals and Objectives

MTC

MTC students will
  1. ground their lives in the truth of God’s Word.
  2. translate their knowledge and skills into mission action.
  3. serve as unifying mission leaders in their communities.
  4. pursue ongoing learning for service in mission and ministry.

COURSE

Being Objectives (Spiritual Formation): The student will

  1. appreciate the tasks of the person who teaches the Christian faith and the methods which are used in the task.
  2. be thankful for the presence of the Holy Spirit in the teaching process of the Church.

Knowing Objectives (Cognitive Formation): The student will

  1. recognize that God’s clear teaching in Scripture is intricately connected to His mission and purpose for the world, i.e. that God’s theology and God’s mission are two sides of the same coin.
  2. comprehend the essential outline and the chief contents of Christian doctrine, particularly as it has been conveyed within the Lutheran tradition.
  3. grasp how different theological traditions approach issues in Christianity.
  4. learn ways in which Christian principles are related to everyday missional living.
  5. become aware of the various elements at work in formulating meaningful expressions of Christian teaching.

Doing Objectives (Conative Formation): The student will

  1. develop skills in applying the Biblical missional message to currents in contemporary thought and life and the relation of historic Christian concerns and insights to the modern scene.
  2. interpret appropriately the Christian understanding of the relationship between God and His humanity.
  3. communicate one’s own insights regarding the teaching of the church to others.
